Position Title: Senior Tool Designer

Job Purpose: Overall responsibility for the build, repair and maintenance of tooling, dies, fixtures and gauging that support diverse types of production operations.

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Establishes departmental procedures and budget.
  2. Coordinates job priorities with production managers, engineering, and machinists in a timely manner.
  3. Works with production and engineering to develop timeline for NPD projects.
  4. Estimates the required number of hours per job, then tracks and reports actual hours for performance purposes.
  5. Develops personnel in order to achieve objectives.
  6. Assists Toolroom personnel in design and development of needed tools, dies, fixtures, and gages.
  7. Participates in performance evaluations of direct reports.
  8. Orders departmental supplies.
  9. Planning, programming, setup, running and process optimization for EDM Die Sink, EDM Wire and EDM Drill machines to make tools and fixtures needed in the manufacture of close-tolerance, precision parts.
  10. Ability to program CNC lathes using M & G codes.
  11. Possess skills in using CAM software (Esprit, Master Cam).
  12. Able to perform trouble shooting and maintenance on machine tools.
  13. Operate conventional machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, and precision surface grinders to cut, bore, grind, or otherwise shape parts to prescribed dimensions and finishes.
  14. Inspect finished tooling for smoothness, contour conformity and defects.
  15. Verify dimensions, alignments, and clearances of finished parts for conformance to specifications, using measuring instruments such as calipers, gauge blocks, micrometer, dial indicators along with optical comparators, and video measuring equipment.
  16. Smooth and polish flat and contoured surfaces of parts or tools, using scrapers, abrasive stones, files, emery cloths, or power grinders.
  17. Visualize and compute dimensions, sizes, shapes, and tolerances of assemblies, based on specifications.
  18. Have the ability to perform mathematical calculations and formulas.
  19. Maintain open communication with Engineering and Production departments on design issues.

  1. Advanced machining center training and certification required. Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Operations or related discipline preferred.
  2. A minimum of 5 years of progressive, hands-on, experience in tool and die-making position with at least two of those years as a supervisor or lead is required.
  3. Capable of using standard tools and measurement devices (GD&T) such as micrometers, scales, rulers, depth gauges and calipers.
  4. Ability to interpret safety instructions, job orders, blueprints, quality specifications, and other related documents.
  5. Experience using Agie Charmilles EDM equipment and Trutech grinding systems a plus.
  6. Good written and verbal communication skills.
  7. Strong math, troubleshooting and mechanical reasoning skills.
  8. Ability to contribute as part of a team.
  9. Good close vision and depth perception skills.
  10. Positive attitude, good judgment and excellent time management skills.
  11. Strong sense of responsibility and ownership.
  12. Strong leadership skills.
